JOHN BALIAN, J.D., M.S. Tax
Mr. Balian brings over 25 years of tax experience to client engagements. From 1986 through 1991, Mr. Balian held the position of Internal Revenue Agent with the IRS’ Los Angeles District.
In his capacity as a Revenue Agent, Mr. Balian audited a wide variety of closely-held corporations, sole proprietorships, trusts, partnerships and highly compensated individuals.
Such forensic audits were principally focused upon uncovering unreported or diverted income, as well as overstated or fictitious deductions. His formal training at the IRS included extensive training in internal IRS procedures and tax audit techniques.
After 17 years of practicing as a tax lawyer with a law firms in Los Angeles, California, Mr. Balian formed Balian & Co. in 2011 and heads its tax controversy department.
Mr. Balian manages an effective team of tax professionals that are specifically trained to negotiate and mediate tax disputes in order to help resolve often complex and emotionally trying financial matters.

Certification
Mr. Balian is a Certified Taxation Law Specialist, certified by the Board of Legal Specialization of the California State Bar.
The designation of Certified Specialist is one that less than 2% of attorneys in California hold. After passing a day-long written examination, the Board of Legal Specialization of the California State Bar thoroughly reviews the education and work experience of the attorney-applicant before granting the Tax Specialist designation.
Teaching
In January of 2008, Mr. Balian joined the faculty at California State University, Northridge (“CSUN”).
As a Professor of Taxation, Mr. Balian teaches Federal Tax Practice & Tax Procedure.
Mr. Balian is also the faculty adviser to the CSUN Bookstein Tax Clinic — the nation’s first undergraduate-run tax clinic where senior accounting students represent taxpayers with tax collection problems and tax audit matters.
Mr. Balian also provides professional continuing education to CPAs, IRS enrolled agents, and other attorneys. From 1999 to 2006, he chaired the California CPA Society’s West San Fernando Valley CPA’s group.
